What a Vibe Coding Interview Actually Measures
AI can generate answers fast. Hiring decisions are made on whether the thinking was yours.
A client got a “yes” on their product sense interview six minutes after it ended.
What changed was not their framework. It was how they used AI in the room.
They described their old approach as:
“Way less strategic. And over-indexed on segmentation of users and their needs that was becoming a bottomless pit.”
That pattern becomes even more dangerous in a vibe coding round.
AI is right there with you. You can ask it to segment users, generate pain points, sketch features, and even prototype solutions in real time. Every prompt returns something that looks reasonable. So you keep going.
By the end, you have produced a lot.
But you have demonstrated very little judgment.
The version that worked looked completely different.
The thinking was already done before the tool was used. They knew the strategic call they wanted to make. AI was only there to help express and prototype that decision.
That gap is what makes the hiring decision easy.
But it is harder than it sounds.
When AI gives you something usable in two seconds, and your own thinking takes two minutes, the temptation to outsource the thinking is strong. Especially under pressure.
Most candidates don’t fail because they lack ideas.
They fail because they stop owning them.
This is not something you fix the week of the interview.
It is a habit. Built in how you prep. In how you use AI day to day. In whether you let tools do the thinking, or force yourself to decide first and use them to execute.
The question to ask yourself is simple:
Where in your prep are you letting AI do thinking that needs to be yours?
If this is a pattern you recognize, I have written more about it in past posts.
